Loudmouth:
The Life and Battles of the Reverend Al Sharpton
From 2020-2022, I associate edited and associate produced this feature documentary about the Reverend Al Sharpton. Directed by Josh Alexander, edited by Armando Croda, the film premiered as the Closing Night selection of Tribeca in 2022 and was picked up by Greenwich entertainment and Showtime.
My three year experience on this film was like a long and fruitful apprenticeship. Writer/director Josh Alexander modeled downright essayistic use of archives and tight, complex storytelling. Editor Armando Croda brought a deep feeling for pace, energy, and rhythm to verite. I enjoyed close collaboration with the team editing out of Kingston, New York and Manhattan. The process was a lesson in reframing ignored chapters of the Civil Rights movement in the north and crafting a story that unfolds across two timelines.
To begin, the pandemic created a prolonged period to review archival footage, including months for watching and organizing hundreds of hours of tapes sourced from Brooklyn activist Reverend Clemson Brown, the National Action Network, and broadcast news. My role on the project span highlighting relevant material, organizing archival, digital workflow, selects, contributing story notes, and facilitating delivery and communication through final mix and color. My dedication from production to screening, from giving notes on interview questions for Rev Sharpton to communicating audio levels with the projectionist mid-Tribeca premiere, earned me an associate producer credit. The generous access given to me by my team and the experience from start to finish gave me a front row seat to how a documentary feature is made across departments.
During my work on the film in 2020, I began an MA program in Biography and Memoir at the Graduate Center. Iām continuing to pursue the degree, as it compliments the character study and portrait elements of documentary.
